“The Red Lion strikes me as a proper free house in Matlock, where the on-site brewery and locally sourced meals really stand out. I think it's a particularly good choice for couples seeking a quiet getaway, with its adults-only atmosphere and convenient access to Peak District attractions. I especially appreciate the blend of traditional pub charm and modern comforts.”

The Red Lion is generally considered a great value, particularly praised for its Sunday roast carvery, breakfast, and good selection of local beers in the bar. Many guests appreciate the spacious rooms, some featuring a four-poster bed and modern en-suite shower room, with some rooms even offering picturesque views of Riber Castle. While most found the rooms clean and well-equipped with tea and coffee facilities, TV, and Wi-Fi, a few guests have mentioned that some rooms could use a refresh.

Average Stay With a Few Issues

I was quite disappointed as I had planned to have dinner there. This was not communicated beforehand, and I only found out when I sat down to order. The lack of information made planning meals more difficult.

charming stay

helpful staff delicious lunch local beer easy parking
The staff were lovely and chatty, very helpful with local tips. I really felt welcomed. the sunday lunch was delicious, and i enjoyed trying the local beer they had on tap. the location was ideal for exploring, and i found parking easily in their patron car park.
the garden view from my room meant it was a little noisy in the evening, though it quieted down eventually.

the pub has a lovely traditional feel. the carvery was great! i also liked that the rooms were very clean. the bed was so comfortable.

Underwhelming Stay

I must say, the lack of communication was something else. I booked a room and breakfast, mainly cause I am lazy. The dinner menus in the bedroom seemed like a bad joke. They should really communicate these changes better to prevent hungry guests.
